famous entrepreneurs over 30 years : Having prodigious talent is not necessary for success. In the cases of the following businesspeople, the defining moment in their careers did not occur until far after age 30. (And if you don’t think you have what it takes to build a culinary empire or pen epic books, have no fear; there are thousands of methods to create money that you could begin right this second.)

List of famous entrepreneurs over 30 years that achieved success

    1. Martha Stewart, 41, CEO of Martha Stewart Living OmnimediaMartha Stewart photograph

When Martha Stewart wrote her first book, she was 41 years old and already rich $638 million. When she was 35, she launched her first business, a catering firm.

    2. J.K. Rowling, the 32-year-old creator of the Harry Potter empireJK Rowling official portrait

Former welfare recipient and single mother of two at age 28, J.K. Rowling considered herself a failure before she became the first novelist to earn $1 billion. After being rejected by a dozen publishers, she finally saw the first Harry Potter novel published when she was 32 years old. The current estimated value of the Harry Potter franchise is $15 billion.

    3. at age 30, Reid Hoffman is a co-founder of LinkedIn.Reid Hoffman photograph

Reid Hoffman’s first business venture was the company SocialNet, which he co-founded before founding LinkedIn. In essence, this was an early version of Friendster, which explains why nobody used it. Hoffman subsequently took a position at PayPal, where he was exposed to the realities of running a business. By 2002, when he started working on LinkedIn, he had already made $1.5 billion from his experience, and the company has since grown to earn him an estimated $4.6 billion. And it wasn’t until he hit 30 that he really began to make progress.

    4. Lynda Weinman, the 40-year-old founder of Lynda.comLynda Weinman photo

At the age of 40, Lynda Weinman launched Lynda.com. After 13 years, she finally sold it to LinkedIn for $1.5 billion.

Weinman and her spouse opened a design school with the 20,000 dollars they made from the books. Her age was given as 40. Online versions of Weinman’s classes first appeared on Lynda.com in 2002. Thirty individuals joined in the first month. Lynda.com was bought by LinkedIn for $1.5 billion after being founded 13 years earlier. As the “grandma of the internet,” Weinman’s age of 60 earned her the moniker.

    5. Mad Men and The Sopranos creator Matthew Weiner.Matthew Weiner photo

Matthew Weiner’s life before creating Don Draper was a lot like Draper’s in the first few episodes of the seventh season of Mad Men: downbeat, aimless, and sort of dull. Weiner tried for a long time after finishing film school but was unable to get into the entertainment industry.

Demoralized and jobless, he spent much of his time doing nothing more productive than sitting on his sofa and flipping channels. When he was thirty, he finally got paid to write when he edited a friend’s script. This opened doors for him and prompted him to continue reading up on Mad Men’s pilot.

    6. Oprah Winfrey, host of the 30-year-old talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show

When Oprah was 33, she struck a ground-breaking syndication contract that launched her business. In 1983, Oprah uprooted to Chicago to headline the morning show A.M. Chicago. It started off with poor ratings but rapidly became the most watched show. Three years later, Winfrey landed a syndication contract that would make her a millionaire, and the show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show.

7: Jack Dorsey, Twitter; age 30Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey, even in his mid-20s, was a dedicated punk skater. Dorsey’s first business was a taxi dispatching app, which he created while still a student at New York University. This failed, so Dorsey went to talk to Ev Williams, CEO of podcasting business Odeo. The concept of a real-time chat platform was presented to him. Williams was enthusiastic about the idea and ultimately joined forces with Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass to develop it full-time. Dorsey has taken over as CEO. At that time, he was 30 years old.

    8. Pandora is Tim Westergren, a 35-year-old man namedTim Westergren

When he was 35 years old, Tim Westergren created Pandora. There was a problem, though: for two years he couldn’t afford to pay employees. Westergren tried his hand at being a musician, composer, nanny, and hippie before he founded Pandora. Westergren was 35 when he established Pandora (his first entrepreneurial activity), but it wasn’t an internet radio channel until he was 37.

Pandora was once a hardware firm that put music in retail locations. Even though Pandora went bankrupt in its first two years, Westergren encouraged 50 staff to continue working without compensation for the same amount of time.

    9. Age 36, Bebo Xochi BirchPhoto of the Birches

In 2008, Xochi Birch received $595 million after selling Bebo to AOL with $850 million.

There are plenty of people who are unaware about Bebo. Bebo was widely used all throughout Europe before Facebook became popular there. Michael Birch (then age 35) and Xochi Birch (then age 33) started the company in 2005. In the third year, AOL paid $850 million to purchase Bebo. An incredible $595,000,000 was their total take.

    10. Alibaba’s Jack Ma.Jack Ma

In fact, Jack Ma didn’t even start using computers until he was in his 30s, and he has never written any code. Even though he is now worth $22.5 billion, he considered himself a failure until he was in his thirties. Ma said he had three attempts at the college admission exam and failed all of them in an interview with Charlie Rose. After that, he sent out over 30 job applications and got turned down by every single one, even by KFC.

At the age of 31, Ma launched China Yellow Pages, his first online venture. In its three years of operation, the firm generated revenues of roughly $800,000. His age upon founding Alibaba was 35. Similar to Amazon, Alibaba struggled to turn a profit in its first three years of operation, but we all know how that turned out.

When it comes down to it, the reality of maturing later in life
There’s no shame in getting a “late” start. Like the famous people we profiled, you definitely have some insights and experiences that may catapult your career and teach you how to generate money. I’m curious, then, what you want to accomplish. Consider this: if you made $1,000 every day, how would you feel?
