Bank Holidays 2022:It can be inconvenient to not know which banks are open on holidays, especially if you need to deposit a check or inquire about a loan and learn that your branch is closed. Because banks are private businesses, they can choose to stay open whenever they wish, including on Saturday and Sunday. However, nearly all banks in the United States close to honour federal holidays.

Special situations, such as the COVID-19 epidemic, may also force banks to close their doors. Many banks have closed branches or placed limitations on when and how customers can visit a branch as a result of social distancing rules introduced during the pandemic. The simplest approach to find out when a bank is open is to call it or visit its website.

You may be wondering which national holidays banks in the United States observe — or whether they are open for business on Juneteenth, which President Biden signed into law as a federal holiday. Continue reading to find out more.

What are the national holidays that are also bank holidays?

Each bank is free to create its own schedule, but most follow the federal holiday calendar maintained by the United States Federal Reserve, which lists the ten federal holidays that are also banking holidays. Here’s a basic rundown:

    • New Year’s Day
    • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.)
    • Presidents Day (Washington’s Birthday)
    • Memorial Day
    • Juneteenth
    • Independence Day
    • Labor Day
    • Columbus Day
    • Veterans Day
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • Christmas Day

Every year, you may anticipate your bank to close its physical branches on certain holidays, however the exact dates for most holidays vary from year to year. The exceptions are New Year’s Day, which is always on January 1; Juneteenth, which is on June 19; Independence Day, which is on July 4; Veterans Day, which is on November 11; and Christmas Day, which is on December 25.

On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, some banks close or have limited hours. Easter, another significant holiday, is always on a Sunday, therefore most banks are already closed.

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, banks usually close on the Friday before. Banks close on Mondays when holidays fall on Sundays.

On which holidays do banks close?

If you’re wondering if any banks are open today, here’s a brief look at the holidays when most banks will be closed from 2022 through 2023:

Banks are open or closed on Juneteenth?

President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday, which takes effect immediately. Because Juneteenth falls on a Sunday in 2022, federal employees will observe the holiday on Monday.

Most major banks will be closed on Monday, June 20, but will reopen on Friday as usual. The Federal Reserve’s financial services, like banks and other federal agencies, will stay open on Friday but will close on Monday to observe the holiday.

According to Bloomberg, Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo will add Juneteenth on their holiday calendars beginning in 2022.

What Should You Do If Your Bank Is Closed?

Even if your bank location is closed, there are a few options for meeting the majority of your financial needs. Accessing your online bank account or using the bank’s mobile app is the simplest approach. Because of the popularity of online and mobile banking, a lot of online-only banks offer a full range of goods and services that allow you to conduct the majority of the banking operations that you could do in a branch, such as transferring money and making deposits.

Another possibility is to use an ATM. Although each machine’s functionality varies, almost all will allow you to make withdrawals regardless of whether they are part of your bank’s ATM network. Deposits can also be made at most in-network ATMs and even some that are not part of your bank’s network.

    Banks in Grocery Stores

Finally, you might inquire about whether or not certain branches are open even on holidays. Bank branches inside grocery stores, for example, generally remain the same hours as the shop, even if the majority of that bank’s other branches are closed. Check to see if there are any nearby store locations that are open on bank holidays.
